CANAL FULTON Calling all riders! The St. Helena III is about to set sail for the last time this summer.
The replica boat, a major part of Olde Canal Days Festival, which kicks off today, is springing leaks from rocks and buildup in the canal scraping across the bottom of the vessel.
The damage is so severe that the boat has to be docked for the season, said John Hatfield of the Canal Fulton Heritage Society, which owns and operates the cement boat.
"We are having problems," Hatfield said. "We're pumping water out, and we're trying to keep it going through Canal Days and on special occasions. If it gets any worse or makes another hole, it's done."
The horse-drawn St. Helena III will sail during Olde Canal Days and for a special wine-and-cheese event on Wednesday. The boat would then only be used sparingly for special events, Hatfield said.
Boat rides will offered at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. today at Olde Canal Days and at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
