WORK has begun at the Ann Jones Inn site in Glenrowan in preparation for an archaeological dig throughout May.

The Rural City of Wangaratta removed fencing and vegetation from the historic block this week to pave the way for consultant archaeologists, Dig International, to move on site next month.

As part of the joint council and Heritage project, the archaeologists will excavate the soil by hand in search of artefacts from the Ned Kelly era.

They will work with La Trobe University students as part of the study, with opportunities for the local community to become involved as well.

Council hopes to engage volunteers to work alongside the archaeologists as their aids for a day, and also to hold group tours on site.

A viewing platform with details of the dig and a website containing up to date information about the project will also be established closer to the official launch, which is expected in early May.
