Ohio housed glaciers during the last ice age. When they retreated along the sandstone rocks, they picked up "tools" - dirt and debris. These tools carved the sandstone rock to create these glacial grooves. Sadly, this island - Kelley's Island - was also a big limestone quarry during the early 19th century and was extensively mined for limestone. Thus, many of the grooves were destroyed. This is what is left.
