Journey to the Sinking Lands
The people of the Carterets Islands, off the coast of Papua New Guinea, are the first entire people to officially be evacuated because of climate change. The islands themselves are being swallowed by the rising sea level, while the islanders' crops of banana, taro and breadfruit have been destroyed by storm surges and king tides. Along with the populations of three other coral atolls, and one island, in the region - about 8000 people in total - the people of the Carterets are now being evacuated and their home abandoned to the waves.
In April, I will be traveling to the islands to witness the first wave of the evacuation and to make a BBC Radio 4 documentary about what is happening. The journey is only possible thanks to this year's Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) Journey of a Lifetime Award.
