In 2006 the City Council decided to give the old cattle slaughterhouse in Madrid, which was built in 1910 by architect Luis Bellido, a complete facelift. The council decided to turn it into one of the most avant-garde centres of contemporary art of its time.
El Matadero’s facilities which cover approximately 148,000 square metres are designed to accommodate all types of art: painting, sculpture, photography, design, fashion, concerts, debates, film, architecture, urban design, landscaping, workshops, dance and theatre.
